Lung cancer has developed over the years to be the number one cancer killer of both men and women surpassing breast and colon cancer. This significant increase is due to the increase in smoking and people who smoke. Smoking accounts for 9 out of 10 persons that have lung cancer and this figure is steadily rising. Cigarette smoke contains chemicals that stimulate the growth of tumors in the human lungs. Chemicals such as benzo (a), pyrene and NNK are all found in cigarette smoke. Years upon years of smoking essentially damages the body’s DNA, and also the ability to repair that damage. Smokers are not the only people at risk however; second hand smokers are also at risk. They are affected worse because the smoke exhaled by the smoker can be worse than what he inhaled. When this is inhaled by the second hand-smoker, it damages his lungs more severely.
There are two types of lung cancer namely. They are primary and secondary lung cancer. Primary lung cancer is developed in the lungs and over the years it grows and into tumors. Primary lung cancers are divided into two groups namely small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These types of lung cancers spread in different ways. Secondary lung cancer is not formed within the lung, but is developed somewhere else in the body. Usually it is developed from some other cancer infected part of your body for example the breast or the colon.
There are many symptoms of lung cancer of which we should pay close attention to seeing that it is difficult to identify lung cancer in its early stages. The individual may develop chronic coughing which may seem impossible to get rids of. They may spew phlegm that is associated with an abnormal coloration such as brown or it may be with blood. The individual may have severe chest pains and swellings around the neck and face. They may also suffer from shortage of breath as a result of the chest pains. Old diseases might reoccur such as pneumonia or bronchitis.
Prevention of lung cancer is simple. All you need to do is quit smoking. This is better said than done. They are many ways that you can begin to wee yourself off of cigarettes. You can use smoking aids such as nicotine patches or have a prescription done for you from your doctor. Some people claim hypnosis and counseling can be effective or you can simply use your mental strength. If you are a second hand-smoker you should try to avoid exposure to tobacco and take regular checkups with your doctor to monitor irregular growths in the lungs.
