The revolutionary device known as the electronic cigarette is becoming more popular by the day and is generating serious discussion throughout the world. The problem with those discussion is that not everybody taking part are well enough informed as the product is so new. In fact even the relevant authorities such as the Food and Drug Administration are confused as to what to do regarding these devices – not fully sure whether to accept them or ban them. There is widespread separation in views as regards whether it is a device designed to help persons quit smoking or just another smoking alternative. In fact, from my research, I have found evidence to suggest that electronic cigarettes can function as both of the above; as they have features that can help quitters and some that can help others to substitute them for regular cigarettes.
So can the limited information available tell us whether the electronic cigarette is a less harmful alternative for smoking a regular cigarette? The answer lies in its features. The regular cigarette is famous for its tobacco, tobacco smoke and nicotine content, which when combined are very potent and can cause a host of harmful diseases (such as throat and lung cancer) which can, and often do, lead to death. The electronic cigarette does not contain tobacco, so it obviously eliminates the risk of tobacco related illness and death. Since it has no tobacco, it obviously emits no tobacco smoke, so the dangers of this smoke are also averted.
In turn, the fact that it has no tobacco smoke also averts the dangers of second-hand smoke. Some say that second-had smoke is more dangerous to those exposed to it than first-hand smoke to the smoker him/herself. This is because the particles in second-hand smoke are smaller so they can travel deeper into the lungs and cause more damage. Instead of smoke, the electronic cigarette emits a vapour which does not affect breath or clothes in terms of smell, does not affect teeth and is not proven to be harmful. The ‘no harm’ part has not been confirmed though, as some educated persons think that studies might show long-run damage potential in the vapour. The electronic cigarette does contain nicotine though. Even so, it allows the user the liberty of being able to choose the level of nicotine he or she wishes to consume. It is in this way that electronic cigarette is said to help smokers to quit.
Overall, it seems like the electronic cigarette may be a good option. There is no sound proof over many of its producer’s claims but the available evidence suggests that it might be a good buy.
