Electronic cigarettes or e-cigs are a revolutionary way of smoking safe. They do not offer the harmful by-products of regular tobacco cigarettes nor the social dilemma of second hand smoking. How is this possible? The answer lies in the chemicals present in the so-called e-liquid and the mechanism that allows the user to access them in the electronic cigarette. This article however, is focused mainly on how the liquid present in the electronic cigarettes work, but to fully appreciate the “how” we should be appreciative on the “why”.
Composed of three parts, the micro-electronic technology driven e-cig has a safe replaceable nicotine cartridge, an atomization chamber, and a micro-processor with a rechargeable lithium battery. As a user friendly way of knowing when the e-cig is working correctly, a LED light is turned on at the front tip of the cigarette when the user takes a puff, thus giving the psychological effect that a smoker seeks. The atomization chamber produces the smoke-like vapor when the user inhales. This chamber heats up the e-liquid, which then vaporizes instantaneously after been expelled into the air. It is the e-liquid that gives the nicotine and flavor with no tobacco odor. Experiments done have conclusively proven that the vapor does not contain tar nor carbon monoxide, and it does not produce anything harmful to any bystander. Of the twenty chemicals produced by the e-cig, none of them are poisonous or carcinogenic.
