Is there a Difference between PG and VG Liquids in an Electronic Cigarette?

For those of us who have been avid electronic cigarette enthusiasts, a close eye is kept on the ingredient that actually produces the smoke-like effect upon exhalation. The two main additives used to produce this water vapor are Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). These are both water soluble liquids that are used in the ecigs in order to deliver the nicotine and flavor found in each cartridge. In most cases, these products are used in fog/smoke machines that are found in most nightclubs and lounges throughout the world to provide that smoke-like effect at various parties and events. Because of their widespread use and constant inhalation, many studies have been performed to determine whether either product causes any harmful side effects. However, research indicates that no harm is caused by using either PG or VG; except for a few cases in which a subject could be allergic to the liquid. Both liquids also have their benefits and drawbacks as discussed below.

Propylene Glycol is the most commonly used liquid found in electronic cigarette cartridges. Its popularity is due to several benefits such as: a longer, fuller and thicker smoke production, a rich and flavorful hit in many nicotine levels, and it also has a sweeter after taste which blends well with most new flavors being produced. PG is also used extensively in electronic cigarettes because of its common use in many food products such as cake mixes as well as soft drinks and salad dressings.

Vegetable Glycerin is commonly used in electronic cigarette cartridges for a much smoother smoking effect. Though it does not produce as much of a hit as PG, the smoke-like water vapor is visibly thicker when exhaled as compared to propylene glycol. Vegetable Glycerin also has a sweet taste which makes e-smoking much more pleasurable with non-nicotine flavors. Beside ecigs, VG is used as an additive in thousands of food and drink products.

So, depending on your specific tastes, the next time you choose your electronic cigarette cartridge flavor, be sure to check out which form (PG or VG) of liquid it is comprised of and choose with confidence by knowing what to expect!
