What is it that makes smoking a cigarette on the big screen by an actor so alluring to the pop culture machine? Ever since the days of the “Duke,” a cigar or cigarette has been a mainstay of the “tough guy” Hollywood actor. So, the question of the chicken and the egg is applied to Hollywood in asking did the cigarette make movie leads cool or did the movie leads make cigarettes cool?
A perusal of the Hollywood timeline is replete with iconic leading characters enjoying a smoke while involved in a high action scene or courting the object of their affection. Movie-goers and advertisers alike were keen to capitalize on this niche which eventually blossomed into a $12.4 billion a year advertising machine. It’s not hard to see why more and more featured films place a cigarette in the hands of the hero and, more telling, why they’ve been reticent to curtail this marketing medium – despite the many pressures from anti-smoking groups.
But what does this have to do with the electronic cigarette? Well, for starters, the e-cigarette offers this industry a great way to market an alternative product for smokers with none of the harmful cancer causing ingredients. Additionally, it can be done at a fraction of the cost of promoting the traditional cigarette due to the novel nature of the e-cig (not to mention the reduction of second hand smoke on the film sets). Has the day arrived in which we’ll notice the lead enjoying an electronic cigarette while saving thousands from some impending disaster finally here? Well, let’s stay tuned!
