Although not yet approved by the FDA, the electronic cigarette is a safer alternative to smoking ordinary tobacco cigarettes. The electronic cigarette works by vaporizing liquid nicotine along with some other dilatants such as water, alcohol and flavoring, and deliver this vapor to the smoker. The smoker then exhales an odorless vapor which spontaneously dissolves into the air; thus producing harmless secondhand smoke. The refills for the electrical cigarettes or e-cigs vary in strengths from high, to medium, low and none. Thus the e-cigs provide a good alternative for persons who wish to quit smoking.
It is because of this nicotine content however, that some people claim that e-cigs can cause nicotine poisoning.

However, just as with the use of nicotine patches, gums and refills, as long as the user over uses the specified dosage, they can be liable to nicotine poisoning. A common tobacco cigarette contains about four thousand poisonous chemicals, forty of which are known carcinogens. In electric cigarettes however, the chemicals used are not as harmful. A lab report by the FDA found that in one specific brand of e-cig, from one specific flavor, from one specific cartridge, less than one percent of diethylene glycol was found. No other refills that were tested had any presence of this chemical. It may be important to note also that it is this same brand of e-cigs that are suing the FDA for stealing their shipments of e-cigs without any authority.

Diethylene glycol is a toxic chemical that was illegally added to toothpaste and proven to be deadly. It is also a component of antifreeze and is harmful to the body. The FDA’s new analysis revealed that e-cigs also contains nitrosamines which are known carcinogens found in tobacco smoke. However, the FDA did not compare the safety of the e-cig to an actual cigarette, but it compared it with a nicotine inhaler.
Millions of people have been attracted from around the world and switched from traditional cigarettes to e-cigs. Although the appearance, feel and taste of a tobacco cigarette are the same as an e-cig, they are much different all together on a health basis. Electric cigarettes are also termed safe cigarettes since most of the negative aspects of a traditional cigarette are absent; such as tar, ignition, and four thousand types of chemical additives that lead to respiratory and cardiac diseases.

It is recommended that pregnant or breast feed women, people allergic to nicotine or people suffering from heart diseases should always discuss the use of an e-cig with their doctor before using one. Now that you are aware of the many benefits and undeniable negative effects of using an electric cigarette, don’t you see how they are a much safer alternative?
