An electronic cigarette or e-cig is an apparatus used as an alternative to quit smoking or just as a replacement for the regular tobacco cigarettes since it has none of the four thousand harmful by products or the dangerous secondhand smoke. The electronic cigarette however, uses various strengths of nicotine refills form high, medium, low and none. It is this property of regulating the amount of nicotine that a smoker uses to eventually quit smoking.
Just as in the use of nicotine patches, nicotine gums and nicotine refills, people can get nicotine poisoning if overused. The secondhand vapor released by the e-cig is odorless and instantaneously dissolves into the air when expelled by the user. This makes the experience of being around smokers of e-cigs much more pleasant since the expelled vapor is harmless.
The mechanics of the e-cig is much simpler than often anticipated. When the smoker pulls on the e-cig, a LED light is activated at the tip so as to give the appearance of a lit cigarette. Also, the atomizer is activated and tiny droplets of nicotine from the cartridge is vaporized and sent into the lungs of the smoker with some other dilutants such as alcohol, water and flavoring. The vapor expelled by the smoker is neither harmful nor does it possess an odor. The major components of an e-cig are a rechargeable battery, an atomizer, a mouth piece and a refill cartridge.
Now that you have a basic understanding of the concept and mechanics of an electrical cigarette, you can now face the controversy of categorizing an electrical cigarette into either a smoking apparatus or a vaporizing apparatus. Well go ahead then, it’s as simple as that; or is it? First we’ll consider the definitions of both smoking and vaporizing apparatus and then well classify the electrical cigarette into the most appropriate one.
A common definition for a cigarette smoking apparatus is one in which a cigarette can be attached to be protected from the wind while collecting its ashes, sparks and any other residue. Here in this definition we see that the cigarettes discussed here are not electrical cigarettes since they produce ashes and sparks which we know an electrical cigarette cannot produce; maybe unless it is tossed into a fire. Also, the cigarette smoking apparatus discussed here is more of an attachment for the tobacco cigarette rather than an electrical cigarette. To get a better understanding of the term “smoking apparatus” let us consider a common type of smoking apparatus called a dugout.
This is a smoking apparatus used to facilitate the personal use of herbs such as tobacco or marijuana. From this alone, we get the impression that the smoking apparatus refers to a device that at least produces smoke due to the burning of some element when satisfying the user, and therefore an e-cig does not fall under this category since it does not burn nor produce smoke, rather it produces a spontaneously dissolved, odorless vapor.
Nevertheless, we will now consider the vaporizing apparatus. A common definition of a vaporizing apparatus is one which accelerates the vibrations of the molecules of a substance so as to carry the substance into a vapor state. When we consider this definition of the vaporizing apparatus, clearly we can relate the electrical cigarette to it. The electrical cigarette has an atomizer which vaporizes liquid nicotine and other dilutants such as alcohol, water and flavoring, as the smoker inhales. It is therefore this atomizer that classifies the e-cig as a vaporizing apparatus.
In conclusion, the electrical cigarette does not produce smoke by burning any fuel substance and therefore is not classified as a smoking apparatus. However, since the electrical cigarette contains an atomizer that vaporizes liquid nicotine and other dilutants, it is best classified as a vaporizing apparatus.
