How to quit smoking with no support from friends or family?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The contention that one must get assistance from family members and friends is a rather grave misconception. The decision to stop smoking should come from the smoker himself. Many people will disagree with this but it is true that friends and family members often end up making you sink deeper into the habit. They do this by vilifying the behavior. They desperately stress it upon you to stop smoking overnight. Since this cannot happen, you have to activate your defenses by identifying with your “dear” cigar even more than you previously used to.

Do not wait until other people present you with endless tips on the best ways to quit smoking. Whatever they tell you might be important but you might not be emotionally ready to adhere to these tips. It would be better if they understood that it takes to succeed in adhering in each of the tips of quitting smoking. So is very important for you to stop smoking and come to some conclusion that you can do it. There are many treatments that will help you get out of this and you will be able to live your life in a right way.

Although family members offer moral support, they are also very good at criticizing you. Negative criticism is what you need to run away from. In this case, you should come up with your own standards and stick to them all the time. You have to learn how to approve of your progress no matter how dismal it appears. You should read newspaper articles and get to know about how other people have been doing in order to overcoming their smoking problems. There are some natural ways that can help you to quit smoking without even relying on the patches, gums and other methods, which supply you with more of nicotine. In case you think of this it is very crazy to take more of nicotine to try & stop.

It is also important to get the approval of your health care provider whenever you are planning to quit smoking. The doctor will give you helpful tips from a professional point of view. Dealing with your anxiety is something that you have to learn to do. You have nothing to fear even if many previous efforts to quit smoking have not borne fruits.

The grip of smoking on society

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Smoking is linked to so many fatal illnesses yet so many people have adopted smoking as a habit (According to the World Health Organization there are at least 1.1 billion people in the world who smoke). According to watchtower.org, a study suggests that 1 in every 4 youths that begin smoking eventually become addicted and that 70% of teenage smokers that have started smoking wish to quit but few can. Why? You would think that if someone chose to do something that potentially has dire consequences, there would have to be very compelling reasons to continue this behavior. So what are the reasons behind the grip smoking has on society.

There are many reasons why people start to smoke. These include peer pressure, the desire to try something new, to find a way to deal with stress and because those in high places make it seem cool. Fair enough. Some may just start to smoke intending to continue but others are just experimenting and actually intended to stop. What can be said of those who want to quit but don’t? A weakness develops when you smoke; an addiction. The grip is tight; extremely difficult to escape.

The fact is that though people know that smoking can kill them, those who wish to stop but can’t are being controlled by their craving for nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive drug found in the tobacco used in the cigarette. Nicotine was found to be even more addictive than heroin and cocaine. It is evident though that heroin and cocaine are portrayed as being more powerful than tobacco, thus lulling some smokers into a false sense of security. Also, after a while smoking becomes a habit and therefore becomes a part of who you are. So as with all other bad habits, the habit of smoking will be extremely difficult to get rid of; but even tougher, as a result of the addiction involved.

It is important to note though that there is hope. A little determination, faith and support can go a long way. There are many also products out there that aid in the goal of quitting this deadly habit. However for many smokers these products usually only last for while and many people are drawn back into smoking after these products fail to work. That is while we support electronic cigarettes since its purpose is to provide an alternative to smoking instead of just a patch or gun that does not leave the user feeling satisfied. These devices offer users a way to have all the joys of smoking without the killer consequences, which we believe is what most smokers are looking for.

The electronic cigarette as a smoking cessation aid

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It is a known fact that people all over the world smoke. They know how dangerous it could be to their health but they do it anyway. This is because smoking is pleasurable as well as addictive; therefore it is very hard for a smoker to stop even if they want to. Many smoking cessation aids have been tried, including the nicotine patch, but they generally have achieved limited success.

So what’s next?

The electronic cigarette came out and it was an instant hit. I am sure you would agree that it is quite a phenomenon to have an electronic smoking device. It was introduced as a smoking alternative but many think it can also serve as a smoking cessation aid.

Why? Keep reading to find out.

First of all, it is important to note that when you smoke an electronic cigarette you are not actually smoking as it does not emit smoke. Instead, the electronic cigarette emits a vapor that is far less unhealthy than the toxic, carcinogen filled smoke you get from the regular cigarette. Therefore the action of smoking an electronic cigarette is unofficially called ‘vaping’. One reason why the traditional cigarette smoke is further unhealthy is because it is the product of tobacco, which in itself is deadly. The vapor from the electronic cigarette, on the other hand, just imitates the flavor of tobacco to give the smoker the taste he/she loves.

The important thing is that even though there are many differences between the regular cigarette and the electronic cigarette, the smoking experience for the user is kept to being basically the same thus enabling a smooth transition from the former to the latter. The smoker (or vaper) is able to gradually decrease his/her nicotine concentration level with the electronic cigarette, an action which is believed to facilitate smoking cessation by ‘weaning’ the user off of his/her addiction to nicotine.
So even though the electronic cigarette was created as a smoking alternative, it is feasible to assume that it can perform the dual role of the above and smoking cessation aid.

Want some ways to stop smoking? Here are a few.

Smoking is considered the slowed way to death. For some it might not be that slow. Cigarette smoking can be very unhealthy for the first hand smoker, and those innocent bystanders also known as second hand smokers. Smoking not only damages the lungs and the blood stream, but can increase the chances of an individual having cancer, stroke or heart disease. If smoking is not treated it can lead to permanent damages to the body. Therefore it is very imperative to quit smoking as soon as possible. The sooner you stop smoking, the less damages your body will go through.

There are many different ways to stop smoking. It should be stated however that without the efforts and commitment of that individual all progress made will be futile. This is so with any other addiction; you must put in the effort to see results.
Therefore a mental preparation must be made in order for the smoker to quit smoking. The smoker must be aware of the fact that this is for the long haul and not just some fad he is partaking in. With a positive attitude, the smoker will be at least mentally ready for the task at hand.

There are countless medications available for you if you are looking for a way to stop smoking. It is wise to get in contact with your doctor first and let him prescribe the best medication for your specific needs. Most of these medications do have side effects which can be very damaging to your health if not taken with caution. Medications can break your craving for cigarettes as it works to illuminate the craving for nicotine in your blood stream.

You can also use stop smoking aids. These are aids that help to wean the smoker off cigarettes bit by bit. Aids help to release the reliance a smoker has on cigarettes until he’s completely unhooked. Some aids are chewing gums, nasal sprays and nicotine patches. What the nicotine patches does is to deliver small quantities of nicotine into the blood stream which helps to lift the craving for smoking. The side effects are most smokers tend to get addicted to the smoking aid after they are able to stop the use of cigarettes.

Hypnosis is also a recommended way to stop smoking for the weak willed. Having a hypnosis session is proven to help some to develop the will to stay off cigarettes. The therapist uses autosuggestion to break the will of the smoker and instill a new will of not smoking.

Finally a smoker can attend a counseling class for advice on ways to quit smoking. He can meet with groups of past smokers sharing their knowledge on how they got over the urge of smoking. These social groups are very helpful in that they help to build self esteem and being among successful quitters can motivate the smoker to also quit.

Breaking the habit of smoking is not easy, as stated earlier. You’ll need lots of commitment and courage to do so. It is more so a mental thing with addictions. Once your mind is set then the routines will be very effective. If your mind is weak then it will be very unlikely any of these methods will be able to properly help you to kick the deadly habit.

Why Stop Smoking

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Smoking is definitely a habit that most individuals that do find hard to curb. While this article takes a look at three specific reasons why you should stop smoking, we also need to take into consideration the control cigarettes have over the smoker. You ask Why stop smoking?

The first reason is that it is actually bad for your health. (Noooo really?)

Yes Really!

Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. In fact smoking is responsible for 90 percent of all lung cancer cases. Lung cancer fatality as a result of smoking has increased dramatically over the years and it has now surpassed that of colon, breast and prostate cancer combined making it the leading cancer killer. This is all because of the increase in the number of people smoking today. This should be one of the main reasons for you to quit smoking; your life may be in jeopardy.

You are not only putting yourself in danger when you smoke however, but also those around you are exposed to the smoke you exhale. Second hand smokers are at significant risk as well to lung cancer if they are exposed to cigarette smoke. So you are probably putting your family in jeopardy, which is another good  reason why to stop smoking.

Your social life tends to suffer a great deal from cigarette smoking.

Smoking damages your teeth as well as your breath and this can adversely affect your social life. Imagine talking to someone but they are not really listening to you but they are more concerned with looking at your nasty yellow teeth…really humiliating. That’s not the worse part though. If you are a smoker there is hardly any product that can help your breath to get better and your teeth to regain its white color so this should also be a big motivator to stop smoking.

You should stop smoking because you want to do so.

Some people complain about how dependent they are on the cigarette and how frustrating it can be to not have one when you need it. That’s what we call dependency and you will need to wean yourself off of it. The more dependent you are on the cigarette is the less control you have over your life. You will tend to be frustrated and anxious over nothing and you’ll treat the people who you love not too nicely. So this is another good reason why you should stop smoking.

These are just three reasons why stop smoking is a good idea. I could have listed hundreds more and will probably be doing so in other articles. I believe that the mere threat of DYING should be a good enough reason but it does not seem to be good enough for the average smoker. Hopefully I will be able to give enough reasons via these articles to help at least one person realize the dire consequences of this deadly habit.
